Alex Elliott's first YouTube video ran about three minutes and took him three hours to make. He shot it after hours in the swing studio at Bramhall Golf Club, with an iPad balanced on a bar stool and a stack of books. By his own account it was dreadful and he hated every minute. Then he made another one.

Bramhall is home. His dad took him to junior lessons there when he was three or four, just south of Manchester, and it is where he met Andrew Murray, who played the European Tour into the mid nineties. Years later Alex caddied on tour for Andrew's son, Tom, and spent a lot of that time at the back of the range watching coaches like Phil Kenyon and Jamie Gough at work. Then he qualified as a PGA Professional himself.

The channel took off in lockdown, when he went from three videos a week to going live every day for a year, from an upstairs office with a sheet behind him. It now has more than 2,600 videos and 161 million views. He is a Golf Monthly Top 50 coach and still teaches in person at Mottram Hall in Cheshire. His biggest video, a weird adjustment for hitting a divot every time with your irons, has 1.6 million views, and the one on why he never starts with the club behind the ball is close to a million.

Watch a few and you notice how little jargon there is. Andrew Murray once told him to give viewers what they need and leave out the big words, and he clearly listened. Most videos start with a question somebody sent in ("Powered by the viewers," as he told the PGA), and the tips are free, short and usually something you can take to the range that weekend.
