Changhyun Nam (Golfslump)

Changhyun Nam filmed his last shift as a chef. "This is my last shift ever as a chef," he says in the clip, and he recorded it so he would always remember the day he went full time on golf and never looked back.

He had been playing for years before that, and he started Golfslump on YouTube in April 2020. Once he made the switch he threw himself at it: more rounds and more courses than ever before, and lessons from coaches he rates highly. They got him to scratch.

He is careful about what he claims. On his Scratch Golf Academy page he says he is not a certified coach, just a player passing on what good coaches around Australia taught him. About 168,000 people follow him on YouTube, and more on Instagram. His most watched video, This Golf Lesson will change your LIFE!, is at 167,000 views, and the 19 handicap to scratch video, the one that opens with his last shift, has 129,000.

His videos come in two kinds. Short swing checkpoints, a takeaway position or a backswing feel you can take straight to the range. And full rounds at Australian courses, like nine holes with PGA Australasia Tour pro Ben Wharton at Moonah Links in Victoria, where he admitted he was very nervous.

We featured him on September 28 for 18 holes at Araluen Estate in Perth. He opens by saying people think scratch golfers hit every fairway and hole every putt, and that most rounds are nothing like that. This was one of the days it clicked, and he shows every shot anyway, with the yardages, the club choices and one lie that gets away from him.
