Jonny (Jonny Plays Golf)

The line at the top of Jonny's channel tells you what you are in for: "Tremendous golf. Tragic golf. Always honest. Always with a smile."

He is a scratch(ish) golfer, his word, playing across Yorkshire and beyond. The channel goes back to 2011, but golf only arrived in spring 2022, when he decided to put golf and making videos together. His first golf uploads were a match against a pal, his 2 handicap against a 19, and a nine hole attempt to break par. A few early ones went out under the name Crumpled Plays Golf.

Four years on there are 538 videos, more than a million views and about 5,150 subscribers. He has played the Creator Cup at Brancepeth Castle, taken on PGA pro Gary Martin at Halifax, and teamed up with Harry Shaw to chase the 63 course record at Pleasington. His most watched round, every shot at Northcliffe and a brutal finishing stretch, is at about 91,000 views. YouTube's Handicap Tracker has had him ranked 60th, and he wants back into its top 50.

The rule on the channel is every shot filmed and nothing cut, so the double bogeys stay in with the birdies. His main series, 3.2 to Scratch, started in May at Sand Moor with a 3.2 handicap and one target, zero. He was down to 2.2 by August. The newer one, Scratching the Surface, goes looking for the UK's hidden gem courses and scores each on condition, scenery, facilities and value. The bag is half museum: a 2004 Callaway Heavenwood hybrid and a 2004 wedge sit next to modern TaylorMade irons.

We featured him on October 5 for episode two of that series, Appleby Golf Club on Brackenber Moor in Cumbria. Sheep on the fairways, no par 5s, no fairway bunkers, and every shot filmed trying to break 70.
