Ron Chopper

Ron Chopper wears a straw hat, reacts to every shot like it owes him money, and sums himself up on YouTube in five words: "Good Player Out of Luck." Under the hat is Matt Heath, a PGA professional who was voted WA PGA Club Professional of the Year in 2020.

Ron started as a way to get a dull message across. During COVID, Heath's club at the time, Pinjarra, had new playing rules to explain to members. He could have put up a notice. Instead he put on a hat and acted them out on camera, mostly to make people laugh, as he told Australian Golf Digest in 2021. The video took off and the character never left.

The early sketches were the stuff every club golfer knows: pro shop chats, lessons that go sideways, rules arguments, pro-ams and ambrose days. The PGA of Australia used some of them to promote the game. There are now more than 530 videos and about 107,000 subscribers. The most watched is a trip to Bonville Golf Resort asking whether it is Australia's Augusta, at 309,000 views, followed by a $5,000 skins match with Luke Kwon, Taco, Sam and Tooms at Millbrook.

These days the comedy comes with real golf underneath. He plays matches against other creators and pros, tests gear (a recent video pitted mini drivers against each other), and takes you to places like The Cliffs on Kangaroo Island. He is a proper golfer, which is why the bits land.

Right now he is in England for a creator version of the Ashes, Australia's Ron against English opponents, and it started badly. We featured him on September 20, three losses in, for the must win match against PGA pro Matt Fryer at The Mere in Cheshire. Go and see if he turned it around.
